Salsa: The
Salsa is the most popular dance in the Latin Clubs. Originally called
Mambo.
The dance is a combination of American Jazz with an Afro-Cuban beat to
create a spicy rhythm. The Salsa dance is fun and exciting to watch, danced
at 38-48 MPM.
Rumba: The Rumba is a delightful Latin favorite, characterized
by a smooth, subtle hip motion and a rather heavy walking step. The Rumba
is written in 4/4 time and should be played at a tempo of 28-32MPM.
Cha Cha: From the less inhibited night clubs and dance halls the
Mambo underwent subtle changes. It was triple mambo and this then became
a dance in itself.
Samba: The Samba is the national dance of Brazil. It is very popular
today and is often called the "Brazilian Waltz"
Merengue: The
Merengue originated in the Dominican Republic and is danced to the fastest
of the latin rhythms. It has a style that is quite distinctive.
Bolero: A dance that originated in Spain. Very slow Rumba rhythm,
usually with Spanish vocals.
Waltz: Waltz is a smooth dance, traveling around the line of dance.
It is characterized primarily by its rise & fall action. The shoulders
move smoothly, parallel with the floor, not up and down. The head should
turn in the direction of the turn, otherwise the man's head is upright
and looking over the right shoulder of the lady.
Fox Trot: A social dance of American origin. A standard ballroom
dance the world over and serves as a good foundation for social dances
in 2/4 or 4/4 time.
Quick Step: The
Quickstep is a fast Foxtrot danced at 46-54 MPM. This dance is very popular
in Europe moving around the floor quite fast with intricate footwork having
a lot of fun.
Viennese Waltz:
The Viennese Waltz is the foerunner of the Slow Waltz. It was the popular
dance in the 1800 and danced to the music of Johann Strauss. The Viennese
Waltz is danced at 52-60 MPM.
Tango: The
Tango is one of the most beautiful and very dramatic of all the dances.
It has a
Staccato movement., and is danced at 28 to 34 MPM.
Night Club 2 Step:
The Night Club 2-Step is danced when the music is too slow to
Rumba. It is a popular dance with a flowing movement.
East Coast Swing:
The swing was a popular dance in the 1930's , often called The Lindy.
The East Coast Swing was the forerunner to Jitterbug and Rock & Roll.
It is still a very popular dance.
West Coast Swing:
Is the California State Dance. It is a popular Dance and there are many
swing clubs that are devoted to this dance. It has a flowing style and
a challenge to learn. The west Coast Swing is danced at 28-32 MPM
